Ouch - Turtles rule OK

SeaForever has its first accident.

The management and staff of Seaforever would like to express their gratitude to Nigel & Leslie Pickering from Aliwal Dive Charters for their unselfish and immediate assistance when our boat was capsized on 18th January. During a routine launch with a group of Photographic Course students led by Ricky Shick, the skipper (Gary) misjudged the speed of the cross wave generated by the sand bar and the boat was rolled over just in front of the pier. After securing as much equipment under the boat as possible the crew and passengers made their way to shore where assistance was rendered to Nancy who had received a nasty bump to the head and neck. The Staff of Aliwal Dive Charters arrived to assist and evecuate the crew and boat, without which we would have been in much deeper water. Nancy was then taken to Kinsway Hospital for observation overnight but decided that feet up in a hospital bed and a little traction for the neck injury was a damn sight better than cooking or doing the dishes at the guest house.

Is NAUI on the way out?

Fatal decline in membership?

When I was a new Instructor for NAUI back in 1996, Instructor numbers of 1700 or so in South Africa were quoted by people in the know.
By 2002 the numbers that were being discussed were 200 for the whole of Southern Africa. This represents a 1000% odd decline in South African membership in just 5 years.

NAUI Worldwide as well as NAUI Services South Africa have consistently refused to comment on these figures but Figures taken from the 2002/3 Form 900 Tax return in USA show a decline of about $133,000 in membership revenue from the previous year. Divided by the renewal fee of $130 at the time would equal about 1028...Is this saying that NAUI Worldwide lost 1000 members between 2002 and 2003.
This does not take into account the split between DM's and Instructors or sustaining status which makes matters even worse.
If these figures are correct and extrapolate on a year to year basis then the decline in membership is over 50% worldwide for the last 6 Years.
The 2 questions are IS THIS TRUE and if so WHY?
I had my membership revoked by NAUI in 2002 during a legal battle over the rights to use naui.co.za which I had registered after NAUI had failed to. Many others have had their status's revoked or suspended in similar battles to save a dying organisation. (right or wrong time will be the judge)
