The Minister of Environmental Affairs & Tourism has published a proposed inclusion of Aliwal Shoal - Rocky Bay into an MPA.
This will have far reaching implications on local fishermen, boat charter operators, spear fishermen and divers.

| Tragedy at Umkomass River Mouth
|
| Fisherman Dies during launch at Umkomaas.
Tragedy struck on Valentines Day at Umkomaas when 4 fishermen in a small craft capsized in the surf.
Divers and Skippers from various boat charters who where also in the river mouth at the time rushed to rescue the 4 men apparently none of which were equipped with life jackets.
CPR was administered to one unconscious victim who later succumbed to an apparent heart attack
This once again highlights the need of skippers and passengers to comply with regulations, and adhere to safety.
The joint committee of the Aliwal Shoal Boat owners association and Umkomaas Ski Boat Club, currently the licensed operators of the launch site are putting into place safety
procedures and regulations to help prevent accidents of this nature. With the exception of a single local Aliwal Charter boat operator who appears to be refusing to toe the line,
all the rest of the concerned and safety concious operators support this action.
Good advice when diving at Aliwal is to choose a Charter Boat Operator that is a Member of the Aliwal Shoal Boat Owners Association, they have a strict code of conduct
that members must adhere to.

1865 - Benoit Rouquayrol and Auguste Denayrouse patented an apparatus for underwater breathing. It consisted of a horizontal steel tank of compressed air on a diver's back,
connected to a valve arranged to a mouth-piece. With this apparatus the diver was tethered to the surface by a hose that pumped fresh air into the low pressure tank, but he was able to
disconnect the tether and dive with just the tank on his back for a few minutes.
