Why did they call it that?

Its cold enough to freeze the Balls off a Brass Monkey.

In the heyday of sailing ships, all war ships and many freighters carried iron cannons. Those cannon fired round iron cannon balls. It was necessary to keep a good supply near the cannon. But how to prevent them from rolling about the deck?

The best storage method devised was a square based pyramid with one ball on top, resting on four resting on nine which rested on sixteen. Thus, a supply of 30 cannon balls could be stacked in a small area right next to the cannon. There was only one problem-how to prevent the bottom layer from sliding/rolling from under the others. The solution was a metal plate called a "Monkey" with 16 round indentations. But if this plate was made of iron, the iron balls would quickly rust to it.

The solution to the rusting problem was to make "Brass Monkeys." Few landlubbers realize that brass contracts much more and much faster than iron when chilled. Consequently, when the temperature dropped too far, the brass indentations would shrink so much that the iron cannon balls would come right off the monkey.

Thus, it was quite literally, "Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey!" (And all this time, you thought that was an improper expression, didn't you?)

Diving News From Aliwal Shoal
Foreign Diver Missing at Umkomaas.

Tragedy struck once again at Umkomaas when a foreign visitor went missing.

A Brazilian Tourist and her husband were diving at Aliwal Shoal with Seafever (No NOT Seaforever), when the divers were onboard the tourist was noticed missing. A somewhat extensive search failed to recover her
She is at this time still missing.

As a result of this Tragedy Seaforever are requesting that all our valued clients please be in possession of a suitable SMB (Surface Marker Buoy) when diving at Aliwal or any dive site for that manner.

Inland Training

Just because you paid half the price you should have for your course, probably didn't get materials to keep, did all your 4 or 5 training dives in Bass Lake or Miracle Waters (all the above the reason why your course was so cheap in the first place) does NOT make you an Open Water Diver, confined water training is great but it is NO substitute for Salt Water experience.

Time and Time again we get newly qualified divers here at Aliwal who have been put under the impression by their "Instructors" that they are now "Navy Seals" after 4-5 dives in a lake. They get here unprepared for Boat Rides, Sea Water etc and suddenly are full of panic and sometimes scared off diving for life. (THIS IS DANGEROUS GUY'S)

Solution:-

Choose a diving school that will ensure you are prepared for Sea Conditions on completion of your training. To that iNLAND Instructor who just wants to take money and not give value and care, Consider another occupation pal you are giving this industry a bad name.

Gary's - DID You KNOW
1715 - John Lethbridge built a "diving engine", an underwater oak cylinder that was surface-supplied with compressed air. Water was kept out of the suit by means of greased leather cuffs, which sealed around the operator's arms.
