| Disappointing Raggie Turnout |
|
| Seems that we have had a lower than usual arrival of Raggies at Aliwal this
year. Speculation is that this may be tied to the disappointing sardine run,
High Water temps and other factors which may or may not include harassment
from divers.
On this point we believe that divers entering the caves and overhangs where
the Sharks are resting are causing the Sharks to leave the reef while the
divers are there and only return later once the divers have left. All the
charter operators have been asked to educate their Dive Masters to keep the
divers out of those places, this however in some cases does not seem to be
happening and may result in the loss of the Shoal to all of us.
We urge all divers that have been led into the caves and overhangs while the
sharks are there and resting by the Dive leaders to seriously consider the
impact they are having on the Sharks and possibly choose a different
operator who will not allow this detrimental behaviour.
A Raggie study is underway at Aliwal by a prominent Scientist Mieke Van
Tienhoven from the CSIR, to view the progress plus latest info on who is on
the Shoal. For recommended diver behaviour and DM/Charter behaviour,
please go to http://sharks.csir.co.za.

| Fingers van Dyk |
|
| Vaughn our illustrious Dive store manager had a fight
with the winch on the bakkie and in the process lost the tip of his finger that he
happened to be threatening the winch cable with at the time.
After rushing him to the hospital he was back at work the next day bandages and
all to get even with the winch and finish the job - you know... some people just
don’t know when to quit. |
